குறள் 1061:
கரவா துவந்தீயும் கண்ணன்னார் கண்ணும்
இரவாமை கோடி உறும்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
ஒளிவு மறைவு இல்லாத நல்லுள்ளம் படைத்தோர் ஈகை செய்ய காத்திருந்தாலும், பொருள் வேண்டி அவரிடத்தில் போய் கேட்காத நிலை கோடி நன்மையாகும்.

Explanation in English:
Even if one who is transparent and good hearted is ready to help, if one doesn't ask for money despite being poverty, that state is crore times better.

இரந்தும் உயிர்வாழ்தல் வேண்டின் பரந்து
கெடுக உலகியற்றி யான்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
இரந்து மட்டும் தான் ஒருவர் உயிர் வாழமுடியும் என்றொருச் சூழல் இருக்குமானால், இவ்வுலகை படைத்தவன் இரப்பவர் படும் வேதனையை விட அதிகம் வேதனைப்பட்டு கெட்டொழியட்டும்.

If there is situation that one can survive in this world only by the way of begging, May the lord who created this world suffer multi times more than the suffering of help seekers.

இன்மை இடும்பை இரந்துதீர் வாமென்னும்
வன்மையின் வன்பாட்ட தில்

விளக்கம்:
உழைப்பதற்கு பதிலாக இரந்துண்டு வாழ்வதே மேல் என்று நினைத்து வாழும் வாழ்க்கையை காட்டிலும் கொடுமையானது யாதொன்றும் இல்லை.

If one thinks that he can manage his life only by seeking help from others instead of earning by working hard, there is no any other misery as it is.

இடமெல்லாம் கொள்ளாத் தகைத்தே இடமில்லாக்
காலும் இரவொல்லாச் சால்பு

வறுமையில் உழன்றாலும் பிறரிடம் உதவி கேளா மான்பைப் போல் இவ்வுலகத்தில் வேறெதும் இல்லை.

Even if being atmost poverty, the state of not asking help to others is the biggest honour in this world. No any other pride can be equallent to this.

தெண்ணீர் அடுபுற்கை ஆயினும் தாள்தந்த
துண்ணலின் ஊங்கினிய தில்

விளக்கம்:
உழைப்பில் கிட்டும் நீர் நிறைந்த கஞ்சியை பருகும் பொழுது கிடைக்கும் இன்பத்திற்கு இணையென்று கூற எதுவுமில்லை.

There is no pleasant from anything else than eating watery kanji that is obtained by own earning.

ஆவிற்கு நீரென் றிரப்பினும் நாவிற்
கிரவின் இளிவந்த தில்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
தன் பசுவிற்கு தண்ணீர் வேண்டும் என்று மற்றவரிடம் கேட்பது கூட கேட்பவரின் நாவிற்கு இழிவானதாகும்.

Even if asking to others even water for one's cow too is  degraceful to the tongue of one who asks.

இரப்பான் இரப்பாரை எல்லாம் இரப்பிற்
கரப்பார் இரவன்மின் என்று
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
பொருள் வைத்திருந்து அதை மறைத்து, கொடுக்க மறுப்போரிடம் பொருள் வேண்டி நிற்றல் கூடவே கூடாது.

One must not stand for help infront of one who denies to aid despite having a lot but suppressing it.

இரவென்னும் ஏமாப்பில் தோணி கரவென்னும்
பார்தாக்கப் பக்கு விடும்

விளக்கம்:
பொருள் இருந்து அதை தந்து உதவ மறுப்போரின் இரும்பு பாறையில் இல்லாதோரின் மரத்தோணி மோதினால் நொறுங்கித்தான் போகும்.

If a wooden boat of state of poverty dashes on the iron rock of cunning wealthier, the wooden boat of povertier would be smashed.

இரவுள்ள உள்ளம் உருகும் கரவுள்ள
உள்ளதூஉம் இன்றிக் கெடும்

விளக்கம்:
இரப்பவரின் நிலையை கண்டு உள்ளம் தான் உருகும். பொருள் இருந்து ஈகை செய்ய மறுப்போரை நினைத்தால் உருக உள்ளமே இல்லாமல் போகும்.

Explanation in English:
If we see the state of poverty of one, our heart would melt but if we just think about one who denies to help though having a lot but suppress it, we can't find  heart to melt.

கரப்பவர்க் கியாங்கொளிக்கும் கொல்லோ இரப்பவர்
சொல்லாடப் போஒம் உயிர்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
பொருள் கேட்டு, இல்லை என்று பிறர் சொன்னால் இரப்போருக்கு உயிரே போகிறது ஆனால் இல்லை என்று சொல்பவருக்கு போவதற்கு உயிர் இல்லையோ?
