THE FUNCTIONS OF AUXILIARIES (A new approach)

THE FUNCTIONS OF AUXILIARIES

Written by Mahendiran V

AUXILIARY is a word that supports to a verb for its action.

A verb cannot function in a sentence without an auxiliary.

There are only 26 auxiliaries in the language.

AM, IS, ARE, WAS, WERE

These are called DESIGNATED AUXILIARY CUM VERB. These words can function as an auxiliary and as a verb in different situations.

The feature of these words is, when these are used as a verb, they will not take any auxiliary for support.

DO, DOES, DID, HAVE, HAS, HAD, BE, BEEN, BEING - are called AUXILIARY CUM VERB.

These too can be used as an auxiliary and as a verb in different situations.

When they are used as a verb they would need an auxiliary for support.

MAY CAN SHALL WILL - are called PURE AUXILIARIES.

They cannot be used as a verb at any situation.

MIGHT COULD WOULD SHOULD MUST OUGHT TO - known as Premium pure auxiliaries. They too can be used only as an auxiliary. Can never be used as a verb.

NOTE: AUXILIARY IS A CO ARTIST OF VERB. BIG DETAILS ARE THERE IN THE SEPARATE SNIPPET TITLED "AUXILIARIES CUM VERBS"

AUXILIARIES CUM VERBS.

WHAT DOES AUXILIARY CUM VERB MEAN?

14 words (AM IS ARE WAS WERE DO DOES DID HAVE HAS HAD BE BEEN BEING) can be used as an aux and as a verb in different situations in the English language. These are called AUXILIARY CUM VERB.

Instantly let's know what  auxiliary and verb are.

AUXILIARY

Auxiliary means that a word which supports to a verb for its function.

No verbs function without help of an auxiliary at any sentence in any form.

26 Auxiliaries are there in the English language.

They are,

AM IS ARE WAS WERE

DO DOES DID

HAVE HAS HAD

BE BEEN BEING

MAY CAN SHALL WILL

MIGHT COULD WOULD SHOULD MUST OUGHT TO.

Of these the first four sets (14 words) are concerned sensitive since they are functioning as an auxiliary and as a verb in different situations.

The first five words (AM IS ARE WAS WERE) are known as designated auxiliaries cum verbs because these don't take any auxiliary when they are used as verbs but they can function as an auxiliary, supporting to any verb on applicable tenses and voices.

The next nine words (DO DOES DID HAVE HAS HAD

BE BEEN BEING) are known as normal auxiliary cum verb as they would need any other auxiliary when they are used as verbs. These too function as an auxiliary, supporting to any verb as said above on certain tenses and voices. Of these nine,  BE BEEN BEING are known  as additional auxiliaries cum verbs. Because, they could act just as an additional role either as an aux or a verb.

The remain ten words (MAY CAN SHALL WILL MIGHT COULD WOULD SHOULD MUST OUGHT TO) can only be used as an auxiliary, can't be used as a verb at any circumstance.

It looks difficult but no any other is as easy as it is

Hello.. Greetings to all. This is MAHENDIRAN, a trainer of English language for grown ups.  Saying frankly, I would express the real fact of tendency of English language whether it is difficult or easy.  Even here too I should have mentioned the word EASY in the first. Because the entire world thinks that it is a bit difficult, I too entered the word DIFFICULT in the first.  When we dig on the Earth for getting water, we dig for a moment and close the pit or leaving it because the water isn't gotten suddenly. And we start the same work, digging for water in another place in the same area. Almost all who learn English are doing the same process when they want to learn English as a language. As I said earlier, Do you know what the real fact in learning English language is? Surely English can never be taught or learned as other skills are.  One can adapt with English only by the way of catching it. I mean IT here is English.  Only by the way of listening and ...
