குறள் 321:
அறவினை யாதெனின் கொல்லாமை கோறல்
பிறவினை எல்லாந் தரும்

விளக்கம்:
அறங்களிலேயே முதன்மையான அறம் எது என்றால் உயிர்களை வதை செய்யாதிருத்தல்தான். இவ்வறம் பிற நல்வினைகள் எல்லாவற்றையும் தரும்.

Explanation in English:
The prime Morality is that not to kill any living being. Being so, all goodness would reach them.

பகுத்துண்டு பல்லுயி ரோம்புதல் நூலோர்
தொகுத்தவற்று ளெல்லாந் தலை

விளக்கம்:
கிடைத்ததை மற்றோர்க்கும் பகிர்ந்து அளித்து உண்டு மகிழ்வதே சிறந்த அறம் என்று சான்றோர் நூல்களில் குறிப்பிடுகிறார்கள்.

Explanation in English:
Great men have quoted in their books that the stance of living and eating by sharing food to others is the best Morality.

ஒன்றாக நல்லது கொல்லாமை மற்றதன்
பின்சாரப் பொய்யாமை நன்று

விளக்கம்:
கொல்லாமையே முதல் சிறந்த அறமாகும் பொய் சொல்லாமை அடுத்த சிறந்த அறமாகும்.

Explanation in English:
Not killing is the first Morality in one's life. Not lying is the next Morality.

நல்லா றெனப்படுவ தியாதெனின் யாதொன்றுங்
கொல்லாமை சூழும் நெறி

விளக்கம்:
சிறந்த அறநெறி என்பது எதுவென்றால், எந்த உயிரையும் எச்சூழலிலும்  கொல்லாமலிருப்பதே.

Explanation in English:
The best Morality in one's life is that not to kill any living being at any circumstance.

நிலையஞ்சி நீத்தாரு ளெல்லாங் கொலையஞ்சிக்
கொல்லாமை சூழ்வான் தலை

விளக்கம்:
வாழ்வின் அறநிலைக்கு அஞ்சி துறவறம் மேற்கொள்வோரை காட்டிலும் உயிர்பலி கூடாது என்ற அறநிலைக்கு அஞ்சி வாழ்பவரே சிறந்தவராவார்.

Explanation in English:
The persons who fear to Morality and being not killing any living being are greater than ones who become as sages by obeying the Morality.

கொல்லாமை மேற்கொண் டொழுகுவான் வாழ்நாள்மேல்
செல்லா துயிருண்ணுங் கூற்று

விளக்கம்:
உயிர் கொல்லா நிலை கொண்ட நல்லோரை கண்டு உயிர்கொண்டு செல்லும் நமனும் பின்நாளில் அவர் உயிரை பறிக்க அஞ்சுவான்.

Explanation in English:
The Naman who plucks the lives too would fear to pluck the live of the persons who are living with good Morality by having sence of not killing manner.

தன்னுயிர் நீப்பினுஞ் செய்யற்க தான்பிறி
தின்னுயிர் நீக்கும் வினை

விளக்கம்:
தன் உயிரே போகும் சூந்நிலை ஏற்பட்டாலும், பிற உயிரை பறிக்கும் எண்ணத்தை மனதில்கொள்ளக்கூடாது.

Explanation in English:
One should not even think for killing any living being even if he is in the situation as losing his live.

நன்றாகும் ஆக்கம் பெரிதெனினுஞ் சான்றோர்க்குக்
கொன்றாகும் ஆக்கங் கடை

விளக்கம்:
உயிர் பலியிடுதல் பயன் தரும் என்கிற அற்ப கூற்றை நல்லோர் எவரும் என்றும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளமாட்டார்கள்.

Explanation in English:
Good virtual persons wouldn't agree the stance of saying killing living beings spiritually would cause gain for life.

கொலைவினைய ராகிய மாக்கள் புலைவினையர்
புன்மை தெரிவா ரகத்து

விளக்கம்:
மாபாதக செயல் என்று அறியாமல் கொலை செய்வதை தொழிலாக கொண்ட மானிட பதர்கள் சான்றோர் கண்களுக்கு அற்ப பொருளாக தெரிவார்கள்.

Explanation in English:
Persons who commit killing is their profession without knowing such is an earth shaking activity will be seen by good moralitised persons as very silly people.

உயிருடம்பின் நீக்கியா ரென்ப செயிருடம்பின்
செல்லாத்தீ வாழ்க்கை யவர்

விளக்கம்:
ஒரு உடம்பிலிருந்து உயிரை நீக்கி அற்ப செயல் செய்பவர்கள், தன் உடம்பிலிருக்கும் நோய் என்றுமே போகாத நிலையிலேயே கடைசிவரை வாழ்வர்.

Explanation in English:
Those who do ugly affairs that is plucking soul from a body will be suffering in their life by carrying unrecoverable diseases till they die.
