குறள் 1041:
இன்மையின் இன்னாத தியாதெனின் இன்மையின்
இன்மையே இன்னா தது
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
இல்லாமையை விட கொடியது இல்லாமை தானே தவிர வேறு எதுவுமிருக்க முடியாது ஆகையால் இல்லாமையை விட கொடியது இல்லாமை தான்.

Explanation in English:
Nothing is the most misery to one than the state of poverty. So that, it can be said that only the poverty is the bigger misery than the poverty.

இன்மை எனவொரு பாவி மறுமையும்
இம்மையும் இன்றி வரும்

விளக்கம்:
வறுமை எனப்படும் பாவி கொடுத்து வாங்கும் நிலையை கெடுப்பதால் இன்பம் தொலைந்துபோய் மறுமையிலும் வறுமையை தொடரவைக்கும்.

Since the sinner namely poverty would spoil one's usual survival, the pleasance of one's life would vanish, also the state of poverty would remain in the future.

தொல்வரவும் தோலும் கெடுக்கும் தொகையாக
நல்குர வென்னும் நசை

விளக்கம்:
வறுமையே ஒருவருக்கு பழகிப் போய் அதில் விருப்பம் வந்து விட்டால், அது அவனது குடும்ப பெருமையையும் பண்பையும் கெடுத்து விடும்.

If the poverty habitually tends one's life and the one is pushed to be interested, it would collapse the one's family's honour and pride.

இற்பிறந்தார் கண்ணேயும் இன்மை இளிவந்த
சொற்பிறக்கும் சோர்வு தரும்

நற்குடியில் வறுமை வந்தால், அக்குடும்பத்தில் சோர்வை உண்டாக்கி இழிச்சொல் பேச வைத்து விடும்.

வறுமையெனும் துன்பம், பற்பல துன்பங்கள் உருவாக வித்தாகிவிடும்.

நற்பொருள் நன்குணர்ந்து சொல்லினும் நல்கூர்ந்தார்
சொற்பொருள் சோர்வு படும்

விளக்கம்:
பல நூல்கள் கற்றறிந்து பண்பட்ட மனிதாராக இருந்து, பல நல் சொற்கள் கூறினாலும், அவர் வறுமையானவர் என்றால், அனைத்தும் மதிப்பிழந்து நிற்கும்.

அறஞ்சாரா நல்குர வீன்றதா யானும்
பிறன்போல நோக்கப் படும்

விளக்கம்:
வறுமையில் இருப்பவர் இழிச் செயல் செய்ய நேர்ந்தால், பெற்ற தாயே அவரை இவர் யாரோ - என்று சொல்வாள்.

If one, who is on poverty, practices any evil acts, even the one's mother too would comment as 'who is this guy?'

இன்றும் வருவது கொல்லோ நெருநலும்

நேற்று துன்பத்தை தந்து கொன்ற வறுமை இன்றும் தொடர்ந்தால், எப்படி நான் வாழ்வேனோ - என்று ஒருவரை கலங்கவைத்துவிடும்.

If the poverty that killed yesterday by causing a lot of miseries continues also today, the victim would cruelly be saddened by saying how he is going to live.

நெருப்பினுள் துஞ்சலும் ஆகும் நிரப்பினுள்
யாதொன்றும் கண்பா டரிது

நெருப்பினுடே கூட ஒருவர் துயில் கொள்வது சாத்தியப்படக்கூடும் ஆனால் வறுமையில் உழல்பவர் தூக்கத்தை துறப்பர்.

It might be possible to sleep alongwith fire, but it is not possible to ones who are covered by poverty, to have a sleep.

அன்றாட தேவையான உணவு உடை இருப்பிடம் இல்லாமல் இல்லறம் துறவா நிலையிலிருப்போருக்கு கிடைக்கும் உப்பும் கஞ்சியும் ஒரு அற்ப சந்தோஷமே.
