குறள் 501:
அறம்பொருள் இன்பம் உயிரச்சம் நான்கின்
திறந்தெரிந்து தேறப் படும்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
மன்னனாக தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட  தகுதிப் பெற்றவன், அறம் செய்யத் தெரிந்தவனாகவும், பொருளை காத்து உயரச் செய்பவனாகவும், இன்பத்தில் மட்டுமே திளைக்க வேண்டுமென்ற எண்ணம் இல்லாதிருப்பவனாகவும், உயிருக்கு அஞ்சும் கோழைத்தனம் இல்லாதவனாகவும் இருத்தல் வேண்டும்.

நற்குடியில் பிறந்து, குற்றம் புரியும் குணமில்லாது, தீயவை செய்ய வெட்க்கப்படும் உயரிய மனம் படைத்தவனே பதவிக்கு தகுதியானவனாவான்.

மெத்த படித்து அறிவுக்கூர்மை பெற்றவராகினும், ஏதோ ஒன்றைப் பற்றி அவருக்கு அறியாமை இல்லாமல் இருக்காது.

ஒருவனிடமுள்ள நற்குணங்களையும், குற்றம் சார்ந்த தீய குணங்களையும் ஆராய்ந்து அளவிட்டு எது பெரிது என்று கண்டபின்பே அவனை ஒரு பதவிக்கு தேர்வு செய்ய வேண்டும்.

மக்கள் தொடர்பு நிலை மற்றும் சுற்றத்தார் உறவு நிலையில் பலமில்லாதாவர்கள், பந்தபாசம் அற்றவர்கள் ஆவார்கள் ஆதலால் அவர்கள் தலைமை பண்புக்கு தகுதியற்றவர்கள்.

தகுதி இல்லாதவனை பற்று இல்லாதவனை தெரிந்தும் தேர்வு செய்தால், நாடும் கெடுவதுடன், வழிமுறைக்கும் அது துன்பம் தரும்.

தகுதியில்லா ஒருவரை தேர்ந்தெடுத்து விட்டால், அவரிடம் உள்ள திறமையை கண்டறிந்து அதற்குறிய பண்பில் அவரை அமர்த்துதல் வேண்டும்.
