குறள் 991:
எண்பதத்தால் எய்தல் எளிதென்ப யார்மாட்டும்
பண்புடைமை என்னும் வழக்கு

விளக்கம்:
ஒருவர் இனிமையாய், எண்களை போல் எளிதாய் எவரிடத்திலும் பழகும் பாங்கே பண்புடைமையாகும்.

நற்குடியில் பிறந்ததற்கான இலக்கணத்துடன் வாழ்வது, நல்வழியில் அன்புடன் அனைவரிடத்திலும் பழகுவது இவ்விரண்டும் அன்புடைமையின் இலக்கணங்கள்.

உருவத்தில் தோற்றத்தில் ஒருவருடன் ஒத்திருப்பது ஒற்றுமையல்ல. உள்ளத்தில் வேற்றுமை எண்ணம் இல்லாதிருத்தலே இணைபிரியா ஒற்றுமையாகும்.

நகைச்சுவைக்காகக் கூட  பிறரை இகழ்தல் துன்பம் தருவிக்கக் கூடியது என்பதை அறிந்து, பகைவனானாலும் பண்பறிந்து பழகுபவரே பண்புடைமைக்கு சொந்தக்காரர்.

பண்புடையார்ப் பட்டுண் டுலகம் அதுவின்றேல்
மண்புக்கு மாய்வது மன்

சிறந்த பண்புடையோர் நிறைந்திருப்பதால் தான் இவ்வுலகம் இனிதாக இயங்குகிறது, இல்லையேல், மண்ணுக்குள் புதைந்திருக்கும்.

விளக்கம்:
அரம் போன்ற கூர்மையான அறிவு உள்ளவராகினும், மக்களிடம் மனித நேயம் காட்ட தெரியாதவர் மரத்திற்கு ஒப்பானவராவார்.

நட்பற்ற பகைவர் தீச்செயல்கள் செய்தாலும், அவர்களிடம் பண்பற்ற முறையில் நடந்துகொள்வதும் ஒருவித இழுக்கே.

பிறருடன் பழகி நெகிழ்ந்து பண்புடன் இருக்க தெரியாதவர்களுக்கு, பகல் பொழுதும் இருள் சூழ்ந்தே காணப்படும்.

பண்பில்லாதவனிடம் உள்ள மட்டற்றசெல்வம் என்பது, கலம் குலைந்துபோன  பாத்திரத்தில் ஊற்றப்பட்ட நல்ல பால் திரிந்து போனது போலத்தான்.
