குறள் 1011:
கருமத்தால் நாணுதல் நாணுத் திருநுதல்
நல்லவர் நாணுப் பிற
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
இழிச் செயல் செய்பவன் சமூகத்தில் வெட்கப்படுவது வேறு. நெற்றி நிறை அழகுப் பெண் இயல்பாக வெட்கப்படுவது வேறு. வெட்கம் என்ற வார்த்தையினால் இரண்டும் ஒன்றாகிவிடாது.

Explanation in English:
The shamefulness attained by one because of his having done evil activities to society and the shyness felt by a pretty woman who has a beautiful forehead aren't same. The first one is considered as dirty and the second one is pretty.

ஊணுடை எச்சம் உயிர்க்கெல்லாம் வேறல்ல
நாணுடைமை மாந்தர் சிறப்பு
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
உணவு உடை உள்ளிட்ட அனைத்தும் அனைவருக்கும் பொதுவானது. ஆனால், நாணம் மட்டும்  நல்ல மனிதர்களின் உடைமையாகும்.

Food and clothe is common to all living beings but shyness is the great sense had by only good people.

ஊனைக் குறித்த உயிரெல்லாம் நாணென்னும்
நன்மை குறித்தது சால்பு
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
உயிர் உடலுடன் தான் இணைந்து நிற்கும். அது போலத்தான், நாணமும் நற்குனம் உயர்ந்த பண்புள்ளோரிடத்தில் தான் இருக்கும்.

Live is merged with body is well known. Likewise, shyness too is merged with the great traited persons.

அணியன்றோ நாணுடைமை சான்றோர்க் கஃதின்றேற்
பிணியன்றோ பீடு நடை
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
நாணம் என்ற நற்குணத்தை ஆபரணமாக  பெற்றிருப்பதால் தான் சான்றோர்களால் பீடுநடை போடமுடிகிறது. நாணம் என்பது இல்லையேல், அது இழிவு என்பதை அறிவார்கள் அவர்கள்.

Only because the great wisdomed are having the sense of shamefulness or modesty as an ornament, they could walk straightly infront of society. They clearly know if there is no such senses it means degraceful.

பிறர்பழியும் தம்பழியும் நாணுவார் நாணுக்
குறைபதி என்னும் உலகு
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
தன் பழிக்காக நாணுதல் ஒரு பெரிய விஷயமல்ல. பிறரின் பழியை கண்டு ஒருவன் நாணம் கொள்கிறார் என்றால் அவரை இவ்வுலகம் பெரிதும் போற்றும்.

If one is getting shy because of his illy act, that is not a matter, but if the one gets shy due to other's degraded activity, the world would praise him.

நாண்வேலி கொள்ளாது மன்னோ வியன்ஞாலம்
பேணலர் மேலா யவர்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
பெருமக்கள், தன் நற்குணங்களுக்கு நாணமே வேலி என்றும் இவ்வுலகில் அது போன்ற பாதுகாப்பு பிற எதுவும் இல்லை என்பர்.

The great persons would comment that only the trait of shy is the protection for one's life and no anything can be compared to that.

நாணால் உயிரைத் துறப்பர் உயிர்ப்பொருட்டால்
நாண்துறவார் நாணாள் பவர்

விளக்கம்:
நாணமே பெரிது என்று கருதுபவர்கள் உயிரை துச்சமாக நினைப்பர். உயிரை காக்க மானத்தை அடகு வைப்போர் வெட்கமில்லாதவர்களாவார்கள்.

Those who think shame is great will think life is trivial. Those who mortgage their honour to save their lives are shameless.

பிறர்நாணத் தக்கது தானாணா னாயின்
அறநாணத் தக்க துடைத்து
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
பிறர் பார்த்து கை கொட்டி சிரிக்கும் அளவுக்கு வெட்கக்கேடான செயல் புரிந்த ஒருவன், கொஞ்சமும் வெட்கமின்றி வலம் வந்தானானால், வெட்கமே அவனை விட்டு வெட்கி விலகி விடும்.

If one has done a very shameful activity but walks on street shamelessly, even the shyness would get away from him with shame.

குலஞ்சுடும் கொள்கை பிழைப்பின் நலஞ்சுடும்
நாணின்மை நின்றக் கடை

விளக்கம்:
கொள்கை குன்றி நடப்பவனுக்கு குலப்பெருமை கெட்டுவிடும். மேலும் அது கண்டு வெட்காமல் இருப்பவனுக்கு நலமனைத்தும் கெடும்.

Explanation in English:
One whose principles are found to be bad in life would lose the prides if his family. And if he is not shameful for that act, all of his goodness would be collapsed.

நாணகத் தில்லார் இயக்கம் மரப்பாவை
நாணால் உயிர்மருட்டி அற்று

விளக்கம்:
வெட்கம் என்ற ஒன்றே இல்லாமல் நடமாடுபவன், கயறு கட்டி இழுத்தாட வைக்கும் மரப்பாச்சி பொம்மைக்கு ஒப்பானவனாவான்.
