குறள் 471:
வினைவலியுந் தன்வலியும் மாற்றான் வலியும்
துணைவலியுந் தூக்கிச் செயல்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
ஒரு செயலை செய்யத் துணியும் முன்பு, தனது வலிமை, செயலின் வீரியம், எதிரியின் பலம், தனக்கும் எதிரிக்கும் துணை வருவோரின் வலிமை இவை நான்கையும் ஆராய்ந்த பின்பே துணியவேண்டும்.

விளக்கம்:
போருக்கு செல்லும் அரசன் அல்லது ஒரு செயலை செய்யும் நபர், தன் சுயத்திறன் அனைத்தையும் கணக்கிட்டு அதற்கேற்றார் போல் செயல்பட்டால் தோல்விக்கு இடமே இல்லை.

ஏதோ ஒரு உத்வேகத்தில் மனஎழுச்சி ஏற்பட்டு திட்டமிடாமல் அவசரகதியில் செயல்பட்டு தோல்வியடைந்தோர் பலர்.

தன் வலிமை எந்தளவு என்றறியாமல், தன்னைத்தானே புகழ்ந்துரைத்து வியந்து செய்யப்படும் செயல் கெட்டுப்போகும்.

பீலிபெய் சாகாடும் அச்சிறும் அப்பண்டஞ்
சால மிகுத்துப் பெயின்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
மயிலிறகை பல மடங்கு வண்டியில் ஏற்றினால் அது வண்டியின் அச்சை முறிக்கக்கூட செய்யும்.  ஆகையால் எளியார் தானே என நினைத்து பகைக்கொள்வது ஆபத்து.

If the feathers of peacock is over-loaded on a cart, it will even break the axle of the cart. Therefore, it is dangerous if one calculates that the enemy is simple.

நுனிக்கொம்பர் ஏறினார் அஃதிறந் தூக்கின்
உயிர்க்கிறுதி ஆகி விடும்

விளக்கம்:
தான் வலிமைப் பெற்றவன் என்றெண்ணி மரக்கிளையின் நுனிக்கு செல்ல ஆசைப்பட்டால் உயிர் மிஞ்சாது. எதிரியின் தன்மைக்கேற்றவாறு ஒருவர் செயல்படவேண்டும் என்பதை இது உணர்த்துகிறது.

விளக்கம்:
தன் இருப்பின் அளவறிந்து ஈகை செய்தால் மட்டுமே ஒருவனின் செல்வம் அவனிடம் தங்கும் இல்லேல் அது கரைந்துபோகும்.

ஆகா றளவிட்டி தாயினுங் கேடில்லை
போகா றகலாக் கடை

விளக்கம்:
செல்வத்தின் வரவு சிறிதாகினும் பெரும் செலவு செய்யாதிருப்பின் செல்வத்தின் இருப்பிற்கு பாதகம் வராது. அளவறிந்து செலவு செய்வதே பொருளை காக்கும்.

தன் இருப்பு மற்றும் செலவினத்தை அறியாமல் வேகத்தில் நடைபோடும் ஒருவரின் வாழ்க்கையில் செல்வம் பொருள் இருப்பது போல் தெரிந்தாலும் இல்லாத நிலையை ஏற்ப்படுத்தும்.

ஒருவர் தன் வருவாய்க்கும் இருப்புக்கும் மீறி உபகாரம், ஈகை செய்தால் இருக்கும் செல்வம் தானாக வற்றிப்போகும்.
