குறள் 481:
பகல்வெல்லுங் கூகையைக் காக்கை இகல்வெல்லும்
வேந்தர்க்கு வேண்டும் பொழுது
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
இரவு நேரத்தில் பலமுடையதான கோட்டானை பகல் நேரத்தில் பலம் பெறும் காக்கை வெல்வது போல, ஒரு அரசன் காலம் கணித்து பகைவரை வெல்லவேண்டும்.

பருவம் அறிந்து, காலத்தை வீணாக்காமல் செய்யப்படும்  ஒரு வினை அல்லது தொழில், செல்வத்தை நீங்காமல் நிறையச் செய்யும்.

வையகத்தை வசப்படுத்தலாம் என்ற எண்ணமுடையோர், ஒன்றை செயல்படுத்துவதற்கு மனம் தளராமல் காலம் வரட்டும் என்று காத்திருப்பர்.

நெஞ்சுரம் கொண்ட அரசன் தன் பகையை வெல்ல காலம் கருதி காத்திருப்பது, வேகம் எடுத்து சீறி பாய்வதற்கு ஒரு விலங்கு  சற்று பின்னோக்கி செல்வது போல் தான்.

பொள்ளென ஆங்கே புறம்வேரார் காலம்பார்த்
துள்வேர்ப்பர் ஒள்ளி யவர்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
அறிவுடைய அரசன், தன் பகைவனின் தீமை பொல்லாததாகினும், தாக்குவதற்கு சினத்தை வெளியில் காட்டாமல் அகத்தில் வெகுண்டு, காலம் வரும் வரை காந்திருப்பான்.

பகைவனின் அழிவு அவன் கையிலே தான் என்று அவன் அழியும் வரை சினம் காட்டாது பொறுத்திருப்பான் சிறந்த அரசன்.

The best king is the one who does not show anger until the destruction of the enemy that the destruction is in his hands.

விளக்கம்:
காலம் நேரம் ஒத்துப் போனால், தாமதமேதும் செய்யாது செயற்கரிய செயல்களை செவ்வனே செய்து முடிப்பதே மான்பான செயல்.

If the time is appropriate to do an action, Doing it without delay even a bit though it is difficult is an intelligent action.

கொக்கொக்க கூம்பும் பருவத்து மற்றதன்
குத்தொக்க சீர்த்த இடத்து
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
இரை கிடைக்கும் வரை அசையாது நின்று இரை வந்ததும் விரைந்து கொத்தும் ஒரு கொக்கை போல, காலம் வந்ததும் எதிரியை விரைந்து தாக்குவதே நல்-அரசனுக்கு அழகாகும்.

The beauty for a good king is, attacking his enemy immediately when the time is very appropriate, as if the bird (Crane) is standing motionless until it gets prey and hooking (picking) the prey in no time when it sees the prey.
