குறள் 871:
பகையென்னும் பண்பி லதனை ஒருவன்
நகையேயும் வேண்டற்பாற் றன்று
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
பகையுணர்வு பண்பற்றது. விளையாட்டாக கூட அதை விரும்பும் எண்ணம் வந்து விடக் கூடாது.

Explanation in English:
The sense of hatred is immoral. One should not want this thought even playfully.

வில்லேர் உழவர் பகைகொளினும் கொள்ளற்க

விளக்கம்:
வில் கொண்டு போராடும் வீரனிடம் பகைகொள்வதில் தவறில்லை. ஆனால் சொல்லாடல் கொண்ட அறிஞர்களுடன் பகை கொள்ளக் கூடாது.

யாரையும் அண்டாது தன்னந்தனியே இருக்க விரும்புபவன் பித்தனிலும் பித்தன் ஆவான், பகைபவர்களையும் சம்பாதிப்பான்.

இரு வெவ்வேறு பகைவர்கள் மன்னனை முற்றுங்கால், துணையில்லா பட்சத்தில் ஒரு பகையை நட்பாக்கி கொள்ளும் சூட்சுமம் தெரிதல் வேண்டும்.

If two different enemies besiege the emperor, the king should have the subtlety of befriending an enemy incase of absence of support.

தேறினுந் தேறா விடினும் அழிவின்கண்
தேறான் பகாஅன் விடல்

விளக்கம்:
வரும் பகைவர், மன்னனுக்கு அறிந்தவரோ அறியாதவரோ, நாட்டில் தெளிவு நிலை இல்லையென்றால், பகைக்க வேண்டாம், பகையை முறிக்காமல் கிடப்பில் வைக்க வேண்டும்.

The coming enemy, whether known or unknown to the emperor, should not be hated if there is no clarity in the country, and the enmity should be put to rest without breaking.

நோவற்க நொந்த தறியார்க்கு மேவற்க
மென்மை பகைவர் அகத்து

விளக்கம்:
ஒருவன் தன் துன்பநிலையை நண்பர்களுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொள்வது நல்லதல்ல. அது போல், தான் பலவீனமாக இருப்பின், பகைவன் அதை அறிந்து கொள்ளும் சூழ்நிலையை உருவாக்கக் கூடாது.

It is not good for a king to share his misery with his friends. Likewise, if he is weak, he should not create the situation in which the enemy knows it.

வகையறிந்து தற்செய்து தற்காப்ப மாயும்
பகைவர்கண் பட்ட செருக்கு

விளக்கம்:
ஒரு அரசன் தன் ரகசியம் காத்து படைபலத்தை பெருக்கிக் கொண்டால், பகைவனின் செருக்கு/ஆணவம் தானாய் அழியும்.

If a king keeps his secret and multiplies his creativity, the  arrogance of the enemy would automatically disappear.

இளைதாக முள்மரம் கொல்க களையுநர்
கைகொல்லும் காழ்த்த இடத்து

விளக்கம்:
முள் மரத்தை வளரவிட்டால் ஆபத்து என்பதனால் முனையிலேயே கிள்ளி எறிவது போல், பகை வளர்வதற்கு முன்பே அதை  அடக்கியாள வேண்டும்.

The eneminess must be suppressed before it grows up as if a thorn tree is pinched at the tip because it is danger if it grows up big.

உயிர்ப்ப உளரல்லர் மன்ற செயிர்ப்பவர்
செம்மல் சிதைக்கலா தார்

விளக்கம்:
ஆணவம் கொண்ட பகைவரின் படையை சிதிலமாக்க திராணியில்லாத மன்னன், மூச்சு விடுவதனால் மட்டும்  உயிரோடு இருப்பதாகிவிடாது.

If a king who doesn't have power to control and not able to collapse the arrogant enemy's troops, It doesn't mean that he is alive because of only he is breathing.
