குறள் 741:
ஆற்று பவர்க்கும் அரண்பொருள் அஞ்சித்தற்
போற்று பவர்க்கும் பொருள்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
அரண், அதாவது கோட்டை இருவகைகளிளும் ஒரு தேசத்திற்கு பயனாகிறது. படையெடுத்து சென்று எதிரியை அழிக்கவும், எதிரி படையெடுத்தால் படைகளை தற்காத்துக்கொள்வதற்கும் பயன்படுகிறது.

Explanation in English:
The defensive wall/ bulwark is very important to a country for two reasons. The first one is to invade and destroy enemy's fort, and the second one is to protect and keeping troops inside incase of enemy's invading.

அகன்ற நிலம், ஆழமான நீர்நிலைகள், அடர்ந்த காடு, உயர்ந்த மலை இந்நான்கும் அமையப்பெறுவதே சிறந்த அரண்.

The best fort must have the  defensive stances surrounding it  such as a broad land, deep and broad water sources, thicker forest and high hills.

உயர்வகலந் திண்மை அருமையிந் நான்கின்
அமைவரண் என்றுரைக்கும் நூல்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
அகலமாக, உயரமாக, உறுதியாக, அரசுக்கு பாதுகாப்பாகவும், பகைவர் எளிதில் நெருங்க முடியாத இந்நான்கு பொறியியல் தன்மையுடன் கட்டப்பட்டதே சிறந்த அரண் என நூல்கள் கூறுகின்றன.

The ancient books say that a bulwark's architecture should be four stances like, broadly, protectively,  strongly and as if the enemy shouldn't enter easily inside.

சிறுகாப்பிற் பேரிடத்த தாகி உறுபகை
ஊக்கம் அழிப்ப தரண்

காவலுக்கு குறுகிய இடமும், உள்ளிடம் பரந்துவிரிந்தும், சுற்று சுவர் உயர்ந்தும், தடித்தும், எதிரியும் வந்தால் மலைத்துப்போகும் அமைப்பில் உள்ளதே அரண் ஆகும்.

A fort should have a narrow way in the entrance but broad and long space inside. The defensive wall should be thick, strong and tall as much as startled by enemies even if they invade.

கொளற்கரிதாய்க் கொண்டகூழ்த் தாகி அகத்தார்
நிலைக்கெளிதாம் நீர தரண்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
எதிரி ஒருகால் முற்றுகையிட்டாலும், உள்ளே வரமுடியாதவாறும், உள்ளிருக்கும் படையினருக்கு பாதுகாப்பாகவும், தானிய கிடங்குகளுக்கு பாதகமில்லாமலும், உறுதியாய் அமைக்கப்படுவதே அரண் ஆகும்.

Even if enemy invade and try to come inside, the fort of a nation should be strong and protective as if not to enter and damage cereal godown and troops that are inside.

எல்லாப் பொருளும் உடைத்தா யிடத்துதவும்
நல்லா ளுடைய தரண்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
தேவையானவை அனைத்தையும் உள்ளிருப்பாய் கொண்டு, தேசத்தை காக்கும் வலிமையுடைய நல்ல வீரர்களை கொண்டிருப்பதே அரண் எனப்படும்.

The best fort is where all needful items can be kept and stocked for protecting a nation and where strengthened soldiers are alertly.

முற்றியும் முற்றா தெறிந்தும் அறைப்படுத்தும்
பற்றற் கரிய தரண்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
எதிரி சூழ்ந்தாலும் அல்லது சூழாத நிலையிலும்  அல்லது சூழ்ச்சி செய்து உள் நுழைய முயன்றாலும் எந்த சேதமும் ஏற்படாமல் வீரர்களால் காக்கப்படும் கோட்டையே சிறந்த அரண் ஆகும்.

கோட்டை முற்றுகையிட்டபோதிலும், உள்ளிருந்தே எதிரியை தாக்கும் வழிவகைகளை கொண்டதாக அமைக்கப்பட்டதே அரண்.

A Fort should have all facilities as if attacking enemies from inside minutely at the time of being surrounded by enemies.

விளக்கம்:
எதிரி வெளிநின்று போர் துவக்குங்கால், போரின் துவக்கத்திலேயே உள்ளிருந்தபடியே எதிரியை தாக்கும் படி அமைக்கப்பட்டதே அரண் ஆகும்.

எத்தனை சிறப்பான தளவாடங்கள் வீரர்கள் ஏராளமாய் இருந்தபோதிலும், ஒரு அரசின் செயல்படும் திறன் வலுவிழந்து காணப்பட்டால் அரண் இருந்தும் இல்லாததேயாகும்.
