குறள் 231:
ஈத லிசைபட வாழ்தல் அதுவல்ல
தூதிய மில்லை உயிர்க்கு

விளக்கவுரை:
ஏழைகளுக்கு உதவுவதனால் கிடைக்கும் புகழை விட ஒரு மனிதனுக்கு பெரும் சம்பாதித்யம் ஏதுமில்லை

Explanation in English:
No any other earning is the best to one as he earns prides by helping poor people.

உரைப்பா ருரைப்பவை யெல்லாம் இரப்பார்க்கொன்
றீவார்மேல் நிற்கும் புகழ்

விளக்கவுரை:
வறுமையில் இருப்போர்க்கு உதவுவதை கண்டு பிறர் புகழும் புகழ்ச்சியே முதன்மையான புகழ்.

The perfect pride is that others applaud one because of his doing immense help to people who are under poverty.

ஒன்றா உலகத் துயர்ந்த புகழல்லாற்
பொன்றாது நிற்பதொன் றில்

விளக்கவுரை:
ஒருவனின் நற்செயல்களால் கிடைக்கும் புகழே என்றும் நிலைத்து நிற்குமேயன்றி வேறெதுவும் இல்லை.

None would stably stand but the pride of one done by good activities.

நிலவரை நீள்புகழ் ஆற்றின் புலவரைப்
போற்றாது புத்தே ளுலகு

விளக்கவுரை:
இவ்வுலகம் தேவர்கள் முனிவர்களை கூட வாழ்த்தாது ஆனால் நற்செயல் புரிந்து புகழ்பெற்றவர்களை வாழ்த்தும்.

The world would no applaud even sages or saints but ones who get prides of his good acts.

நத்தம்போல் கேடும் உளதாகுஞ் சாக்காடும்
வித்தகர்க் கல்லால் அரிது

விளக்கவுரை:
அத்தனை துன்பத்திலும் கஷ்ட்டத்திலும் புகழை தாங்கி நிற்கும் தன்மை சாவிற்கு பிறகும் நிலைத்து நிற்கும்.

Retaining prides despite being infinite difficulties would ever stand even after death too.

தோன்றின் புகழோடு தோன்றுக அஃதிலார்
தோன்றலின் தோன்றாமை நன்று

விளக்கவுரை:
நற்செயல் புரிந்து புகழ்பெற்று வாழும் வாழ்க்கையே வாழ்க்கையாகும். இல்லேல் வாழ வந்ததே அர்த்தமற்றதாகும்.

One should live with earning prides a lot by doing enormous betterments otherwise one's birth is meaningless.

புகழ்பட வாழாதார் தந்நோவார் தம்மை
இகழ்வாரை நோவ தெவன்

விளக்கவுரை:
புகழுடன் வாழ இயலாதவர் தன் இயலாமையை மறைத்து அதற்காக பிறரை இகழ்ந்து உரைப்பது சிறுமையாகும்.

It's meaningless what one who is not able to be granted prides because of his inability but accusing others instead of him.

வசையென்ப வையத்தார்க் கெல்லாம் இசையென்னும்
எச்சம் பெறாஅ விடின்

வாழ்வில் எஞ்சி நிற்பது புகழ் தான் என்றெண்ணி வாழ்வில் புகழ் பெற வாழ தவறுவது ஒரு பழியாகும்.

Failing being granted prides despite knowing that only pride remains ever is a crime.

வசையிலா வண்பயன் குன்றும் இசையிலா
யாக்கை பொறுத்த நிலம்

புகழ்பெற்று வாழ முயற்சிக்காதவரை சுமந்ததற்காக இந்த புவியே வெட்கி நிற்கும்.

The earth too would shy and lose its dignity for carrying ones who fail to live with prides of good activites.

வசையொழிய வாழ்வாரே வாழ்வார் இசையொழிய
வாழ்வாரே வாழா தவர்

விளக்கவுரை:
பழி/குற்றமில்லாமல் வாழ்பவரே வாழ்பவர்களாவார்கள். அது போல புகழ் இல்லாமல் வாழ்பவர்கள் வாழ லாயக்கற்றவர்களாவார்கள்.

Explanation in English:
Only the life of ones without crime is the best life likewise the life of ones without prides is the worst life.
