குறள் 921:
உட்கப் படாஅர் ஒளியிழப்பர் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
கட்காதல் கொண்டொழுகு வார்

விளக்கம்:
மதுப் பிரியர்கள் தான் சமூகத்திற்கு அஞ்சவேண்டும். சமூகம் அஞ்சாது. மேலும் மட்டு மரியாதையை இழப்பார்கள்.

Only the liquor consumer should be afraid of the society. The society need not be afraid of for his action. Moreover, he would lose entire dignity of him.

எண்ணப் படவேண்டா தார்

விளக்கம்:
மதுவை துறப்பது நல்லது. சான்றோரிடம் நற்பெயர் வேண்டாம் என்பவர்கள்தான் மதுவை விரும்புவார்கள்.

It's better to stop consuming liquor. If one doesn't want to earn goodwill from the grest persons, he may desire it.

விளக்கம்:
மது அருந்தி பெற்ற தாய் முன்பு நிற்பது கொடுமை. அதுவும் சான்றோர் முன் நிற்பது கொடுமையிலும் கொடுமை.

நாணம், மானம் என்ற நற்குனங்கள் நிறைந்தவள் கள்ளுண்டவனை விட்டு விலகி ஓடிவிடுவாள். மரியாதை இழந்து நிற்கும் நிலை ஏற்படும்.

நஞ்சு உண்டு இறப்பவருக்கும், கள்ளுண்டு மயங்கி உறங்குபவருக்கும் பெரிய வித்தியாசம் ஒன்றுமில்லை.

There is no much difference between the person who died and laid on Street due to eating poison and laid on Street by drinking liquor.

விளக்கம்:
உள்ளுரில் மறைந்து நின்று கள்ளுண்டால் ஊரார் அறியமாட்டார் என்றில்லை, கள்ளுண்ட கண்களும் மயக்கமும் காட்டிக் கொடுத்து எள்ளி நகையாடப்படுவார்.

Explanation in English:
It's not like that local colleagues wouldn't know if one drinks liquor hiding. The eyes and dizzy of one who is drunken would identify it and he would be laughed at as shamefully by the society.

களித்தறியேன் என்பது கைவிடுக நெஞ்சத்
தொளித்ததூஉம் ஆங்கே மிகும்

மது அருந்தி, அருந்தேன் நான் எனச் சொல்வது பொய் மட்டுமல்ல மடைமையும் கூட. மயக்கமும் ஆட்டமும் தானாய் உண்மையை சொல்லும்.

After drank, if one says that he hasn't drunk, that is not only lie but also foolish. Dizzy and shaking walk would say the fact.

மதுவுக்கு அடிமையானவனை திருத்த முயற்சிப்பதும், நீருக்குள் மூழ்கியவனை தீப்பந்தம் கொண்டு தேடுவதும் ஒன்று தான்.

உள்ளான்கொல் உண்டதன் சோர்வு

விளக்கம்:
ஒரு மது விரும்பி அருந்தா நிலையில், மற்றொருவன் மது அருந்தி விழுந்து புரண்டு சீரழியும் போக்கை கண்டாவது மதுவை நிறுத்தவில்லை என்றால் அவன் மனித பிறப்பே இல்லை.
