குறள் 931:
வேண்டற்க வென்றிடினும் சூதினை வென்றதூஉம்
தூண்டிற்பொன் மீன்விழுங்கி அற்று
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
சூது விளையாட்டில்  வென்றாலும் தொடர்தல் கூடாது. அவ்வெற்றி தூண்டிலின் இரைக்கு மீன் அகப்பட்டது போலாகும். (ஒரு கட்டத்தில் தூண்டிலுடன் நம்மையும் மீன் நீருக்குள் இழுத்து விடும்.)

Explanation in English:
It's better to stop playing gambling even if getting victory. Such victory is like the prey tighten in the iron bar is swallowed by fish. One fine day the fish would pull out us into the water.

ஒன்றெய்தி நூறிழக்கும் சூதர்க்கும் உண்டாங்கொல்
நன்றெய்தி வாழ்வதோர் ஆறு

ஒரு மடங்கை பெற்று, நூறு மடங்கை இழக்க வைக்கும் விளையாட்டு தான் சூதாட்டம். நல்வாழ்வு பெற வாய்ப்பே இல்லை.

Gambling is the game that provides one part for making the player be pleasant, later it would pluck off hundred part from him. No chance at all to have a good life.

ஒரு முறை வந்த லாபம் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் வரும் என்று சூதாடினால் பணம் அனைத்தையும் இழக்க நேரிடும்.

துன்பத்தையும் தந்து, புகழையும் கெடுக்கும் சூதாட்டத்தைப் போல் ஒருவருக்கு வறுமையை தரக்கூடிய ஒன்று வேறெதுவுமில்லை.

Nothing would cause big poverty as if gambling causes since it would spoil one's life by destructing fame and providing misery.

கவறும் கழகமும் கையும் தருக்கி
இவறியார் இல்லாகி யார்

விளக்கம்:
சூதாடும் சூட்சுமம் அனைத்தும் அறிவேன் என்ற பெருமையுடன் ஒருவன் (உண்மையிலேயே அவன் அறிந்திருந்தாலும்) தொடர்ந்து விளையாண்டால், பொருளிருப்பு அனைத்தையும் அவன் இழப்பான்.

If one is saying that he is an expert in gambling and he knows the tricks, and also if he resumes gambling, he would lose his stock of entire wealth.

சூதெனும் தரித்திரத்தில்  விழுந்தவர் சரியான நேரத்தில் பசி தீர உணவும் உண்ணாமல்  துன்பப்படுவர்.

சூதாடும் களமே நிரந்தர இருப்பிடம் எனும் அளவுக்கு அதில் மூழ்கிப் போனவர்கள், மூதாயர்களின் செல்வம் மட்டுமல்ல,  நற்பண்புகளையும் இழப்பர்.

சூது, பொருளை விழுங்கும். பொய் புரட்டு பேசவைக்கும். அருளை கெடுக்கும். ஈடில்லா துன்பத்தை தரும்.

சூது, உடை செல்வம் உணவு புகழ் கல்வி ஆகிய ஐந்து முக்கிய அம்சங்களை ஒருவனிடமிருந்து விலக்கிவிடும்.

விளக்கம்:
துன்பம் தொடர்ந்து வர வர, வாழ விரும்பி உயிர் மீது ஆசை கொள்வது போல், சூதாட்டத்தில் பொருளை இழக்க இழக்க அதன் மீது நாட்டம் அதிகரிக்கும்.
