குறள் 961:
இன்றி அமையாச் சிறப்பின ஆயினும்
குன்ற வருப விடல்
- தெய்வப்புலவர்

விளக்கம்:
மிக முக்கியமான அவசியமான செயல் ஆனாலும் தன் குடிப்பெருமைக்கு (மானத்திற்கு) அது இழுக்கு ஏற்படுமானால் செய்யாமல் இருப்பதே நல்லது.

Even if one commits very important and so necessary act, if it swallows the one's honour, it's better not to do such act.

விளக்கம்:
சீரிய வீரமிக்க  செயலானாலும் புகழ் மிக்கதாக அது இருந்தாலும் குலப் பெருமைக்கு உகந்தாக அது இல்லாவிடின் அச்செயலை தவிர்க்க வேண்டும்.

Even if one is very brave action and such action brings some fames, if it is against the honour of one's birth, must avoid it.

பெருக்கத்து வேண்டும் பணிதல் சிறிய
சுருக்கத்து வேண்டும் உயர்வு

விளக்கம்:
பணம் தழைத்திருக்கும் காலத்தில் பணிவு இருக்க வேண்டும். ஒருவேளை செல்வம் குன்றிப்போனால், மனம் தளரா வீரம் இருக்க  வேண்டும்.

வாழ்வாங்கு வாழ்ந்து தாழ்ந்து போனவர், தலையிலிருந்து விழுந்த தலைமுடிக்கு ஒப்பாவர்.

விளக்கம்:
குன்றாய் ஓங்கி வளர்ந்து வாழ்வோர், குன்றிமணி அளவு குறை செய்தால் கூட கூனி குறுகும் நிலையை அடைவர்.

If ones who live like the height of mountain committing a simple mistake (even if such mistake is the size of little rosary pea), they would be blamed a lot byvthe society.

புகழின்றால் புத்தேணாட் டுய்யாதால் என்மற்
றிகழ்வார்பின் சென்று நிலை

விளக்கம்:
வாழ வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக இகழ்பவனை ஏற்று, அவன் பின் செல்வதால் எப்பயனும் இல்லை. பெருமையும் கிடைக்காது அருளும் கிடைக்காது.

For the sake of living, The stance of following silly persons who blame us is useless. can't get any pride from that. Blesdings tended so far too will fly away.

ஒட்டார்பின் சென்றொருவன் வாழ்தலின் அந்நிலையே
கெட்டான் எனப்படுதல் நன்று

விளக்கம்:
புறம்பேசி இகழ்பவனின் உதவி கிட்டி உயிர் வாழ்ந்து மானத்தை தொலைப்பதை விட, உயிர் போனாலும் இருந்த நிலையே போதும் என்ற உறுதி எண்ணம் வர வேண்டும்.

Rather being in the normal status by having bravery like even if the life is lost too is better than losing honour by following ones who are blaming back side by worst words, for living.

மருந்தோமற் றூனோம்பும் வாழ்க்கை பெருந்தகைமை
பீடழிய வந்த இடத்து

பெருமை காக்க வேண்டி மனம் ஒவ்வா செயல் செய்வது, சாகாமல் இருக்க மருந்தொன்றை தேடுவது போலாகும்.

The state of doing against one's conscience owing to protecting prides is equallent to seeking medicine for not dying.

மயிர்நீப்பின் வாழாக் கவரிமா அன்னார்
உயிர்நீப்பர் மானம் வரின்

விளக்கம்:
உடல் உரோமம் கலைந்தால் உயிர் வாழாதாம் கவரிமான். அது போல், குடும்ப பெருமை குலைந்தால், உடம்புடன் இருக்கும் உயிர் எதற்கு என்பராம் மானமுள்ளவர். (உயிரை துச்சமாக நினைப்பது வீரம் தான் என்றாலும் தானாக மாய்த்துக் கொள்ளக் கூடாது)

மானமிழந்து வாழ்வதை விட மானத்துடன் மாள்வதே மேல் என்றுரைப்போரை வியந்துபோய் மதித்து நோக்குமாம் உலகம். (உயிரை துச்சமாக நினைப்பது வீரத்திற்கு தான். தானாக மாய்த்து கொள்ளுதல் கூடாது)
