குறள் 121:
அடக்கம் அமரருள் உய்க்கும் அடங்காமை
ஆரிருள் உய்த்து விடும்

விளக்கம்:
அடங்கி வணக்கத்துடன் வாழும் வாழ்க்கை மிளிரும். அப்படி வாழாத வாழ்க்கையை இருள்சூழும்.

Explanation in English:
Obedience will bring one to a bright life. Failing which will be brought to a dark life.

காக்க பொருளா அடக்கத்தை ஆக்கம்
அதனினூஉங் கில்லை உயிர்க்கு

விளக்கம்:
அடக்கமான குணம் ஒருவனின் வாழ்க்கையை பலமாக்குவதுபோல் வேறு எதுவும் பலமாக்காது.

Explanation in English:
Obedience is the big wealth to one's life. No any other to strengthen one's life.

செறிவறிந்து சீர்மை பயக்கும் அறிவறிந்
தாற்றின் அடங்கப் பெறின்

விளக்கம்:
அடக்கம், பணிவுடன் வாழ்வதே அறிவார்ந்த செயல் என்பதையுணர்ந்து வாழ்பவரின் வாழ்க்கையில் எல்லையில்லா புகழ் என்றும் நிறைந்திருக்கும்.

Explanation in English:
One who knows only the obedient way is sensible will be lifted up for getting infinite fames by all in his life.

நிலையின் திரியா தடங்கியான் தோற்றம்
மலையினும் மாணப் பெரிது

விளக்கம்:
கிஞ்சித்த அளவும் ஒழுக்கம் தவறாது பணிவுடன் வாழும் தன்மை எந்த ஒரு மலையை காட்டிலும் உயரமானது.

Explanation in English:
Living without slipping even bit in the way of discipline and obedience is taller than any mountain.

எல்லார்க்கும் நன்றாம் பணிதல் அவருள்ளும்
செல்வர்க்கே செல்வம் தகைத்து

விளக்கம்:
ஒழுக்கநெறிகளை கையாண்டு பணிவுடன் வாழ்பவனே செல்வந்தர்களை விட செல்வந்தன்.

One who is obeying good people and living disciplilinarilly is rich man than any other rich people.

ஒருமையுள் ஆமைபோல் ஐந்தடக்கல் ஆற்றின்
எழுமையும் ஏமாப் புடைத்து

ஆமை தன் அவையங்களை தன் ஓட்டுக்குள் இழுத்து வைத்துக்கொள்வதுபோல் ஐம்புலன்களையும் அடக்கியாளும் வித்தை தெரிந்தவன் தற்காலத்திலும் எதிர்காலத்திலும் செல்வ செழிப்புடன் விளங்குவான்.

Explanation in English:
One who balances his senses of  five prime parts like a tortoise does will live well in life and also in the future lives having all wealth.

யாகாவா ராயினும் நாகாக்க காவாக்காற்
சோகாப்பர் சொல்லிழுக்குப் பட்டு

விளக்கம்:
பேச்சில் தன் நாவை அடக்கி ஆளத் தெரியாதவனுக்கு எல்லா வகையிலும் துன்பநிலை வந்துசேரும்.

Explanation in English:
If one doesn't control his tongue during speaking he will suffer with difficulties a lot in all respects.

ஒன்றானுந் தீச்சொல் பொருட்பயன் உண்டாயின்
நன்றாகா தாகி விடும்

விளக்கம்:
ஒரு சிறிய, தீய வார்த்தை போதும், ஒருவன் சம்பாதித்து வைத்த அனைத்து நற்புகழை வீனாக்கிவிடும்.

A single evil word is enough much to spoil one's earned all moralities.

தீயினாற் சுட்டபுண் உள்ளாறும் ஆறாதே
நாவினாற் சுட்ட வடு

விளக்கம்:
நெருப்பினால் வந்த காயம் கூட குணமாகிவிடும் ஆனால் கடுஞ்சொற்களால் ஏற்படும் காயத்தை குணப்படுத்த முடியாது.

Explanation in English:
Sore caused even by fire too can be cured but not an injury caused by words.

கதங்காத்துக் கற்றடங்கல் ஆற்றுவான் செவ்வி
அறம்பார்க்கும் ஆற்றின் நுழைந்து

சிறந்த கல்வியும் நற்பண்பும் கொண்டு மதிப்பு மிக்கவனாக வாழ்பவனை அந்த அறமே காத்திருந்து அவனை வரவேற்கும்.

பாரபட்சம் பார்க்காது உண்மைநிலையறிந்து நடுவுநிலை காப்பதே ஒரு நீதிமானின் ஒழுக்கம்.

செப்பம் உடையவன் ஆக்கஞ் சிதைவின்றி
எச்சத்திற் கேமாப் புடைத்து

சிறந்த நீதிமானின் செல்வம் தழைத்தோங்கும். பிற்காலத்தில் சந்ததியினருக்கு அது அழியா சொத்தாக அமையும்.

Explanation in English:
A honest justice's wealth will be forever. It shall be a solid property to his descendants.

நன்றே தரினும் நடுவிகந்தாம் ஆக்கத்தை
அன்றே யொழிய விடல்

விளக்கம்:
அநீதி நன்மையை தரும் என்ற நிலை ஏற்பட்டாலும்கூட எக்காரணம் கொண்டும்  நடுவுநிலை நீதி வழுவக்கூடாது.

Explanation in English:
Even if an injustice causes gain, justification shouldn't foul at any reason.

தக்கார் தகவிலர் என்ப தவரவர்
எச்சத்தாற் காணப் படும்

விளக்கம்:
ஒருவர் நடுவு நிலையின் பொழுது நீதியுடன் நடந்துகொண்டாரா இல்லையா என்பது அவர் தன் சந்ததியினரின் வாழ்க்கையில் காட்டிக்கொடுத்துவிடும்.

Explanation in English:
It will be known during the decendants' life in the future whether one has behaved justicious or not during his role as a justice.

கேடும் பெருக்கமும் இல்லல்ல நெஞ்சத்துக்
கோடாமை சான்றோர்க் கணி

விளக்கம்:
நன்மையும் தீமையும் இயல்புதான் என்றாகினும், வாய்மையுடன் நீதியுடன் நடந்துகொள்வதே நல்ல மனிதனுக்கு அழகு.

Explanation in English:
Although Good and bad of ones have been scripted earlier by the nature. Being honest and justicious is pretty to a good man.

கெடுவல்யான் என்ப தறிகதன் நெஞ்சம்
நடுவொரீஇ அல்ல செயின்

விளக்கம்:
நீதியாளனாக இருந்து கொண்டு நீதி தவறி நடக்க ஒருவர் விழைந்தால் அவர் நிச்சயம் கெடப்போகிறார் என்பதற்கான அறிகுறி.

If one fouls from justice on his being as a judge, that is a symptoms that he goes to be spoilt surely.

கெடுவாக வையா துலகம் நடுவாக
நன்றிக்கண் தங்கியான் தாழ்வு

நீதி வழுவா நிலை ஒருவேளை வறுமையை தருமானால், நல்லவர்கள் எவரும் அதை வறுமையென கூறமாட்டார்கள்.

Even if one goes to poverty since he follows justice, that wouldn't be considered as poverty by good people.

சமன்செய்து சீர்தூக்குங் கோல்போல் அமைந்தொருபாற்
கோடாமை சான்றோர்க் கணி

விளக்கம்:
ஒரு நல்ல நடுவன் நிலை என்பது, தராசு அங்கும் இங்கும் ஆடி இறுதியில் சரியான நிறையை காட்டுவதுபோல், எப்பக்கமும் சாய்ந்துவிடாமல் நீதியை அறிவிப்பதே ஆகும்.

Explanation in English:
A Good justice means not to lay any side blindly. It should be right way as if the scale measures accurately in final despite dangling here and there.

சொற்கோட்டம் இல்லது செப்பம் ஒருதலையா
உட்கோட்டம் இன்மை பெறின்

ஒரு பக்கம் சாய்வில்லாது நடுவன் நிலையின் மனம் பலமாக இருப்பின், அவர் உதிர்க்கும் சொற்கள் நல்ல நீதியை வழங்கும்.

If a judge's mind is strong without laying one side, his words surely will declare a good justice.

வானகமும் ஆற்றல் அரிது

யாதொரு உதவியும் பிறர்க்கு செய்யாமல் அந்த பிறரால் உபகாரம் அடைந்தோர் இந்த விண்ணுலகம் மண்ணுலகத்தையும் தந்தாலும் அது ஈடாகாது.

One who has done nothing a help to others but has been helped a lot by others cannot compensate even if he gifts this sky and earth.

காலத்தி னாற்செய்த நன்றி சிறிதெனினும்

பயன்தூக்கார் செய்த உதவி நயன்தூக்கின்
நன்மை கடலின் பெரிது

எந்த பிரதிபலனையும் மனதில்கூட நினைக்காது ஆற்றும் உதவியானது கடலைவிட மிகப்பெரியது.

Explanation in English:
The stance of a help enthusiastically done by one without any expectation is bigger than ocean.

தினைத்துணை நன்றி செயினும் பனைத்துணையாக்
கொள்வர் பயன்தெரி வார்

விளக்கம்:
ஒருவர் செய்த உதவி தினையளவாகினும், அவ்வுதவி செய்யப்பட்ட காலத்தை மனதில் வைத்து, பயனடைந்தவர் அது பனைமரத்தை காட்டிலும் உயரமானது என்பர்.

Even if the volume of help is a small size, the person who is helped would know that it is taller than a palm tree because of done at crisis time.

செயப்பட்டார் சால்பின் வரைத்து

உதவியின் அளவு பெரிதோ சிறிதோ, உதவி அடைந்தவரின் பண்பை பொறுத்தே உதவியின் அளவுகோள் என்னவென்று அறியமுடியும்.

The type and volume of a help is not a matter but its scale and quality is categorised based on the morality of the person who is helped.

மறவற்க மாசற்றார் கேண்மை துறவற்க
துன்பத்துள் துப்பாயார் நட்பு

குற்றமற்றவர்களை மறக்காமல் இருப்பதுபோல், தக்க நேரத்தில் உதவியவர்களை துறக்காமல் இருத்தல் வேண்டும்.

One shouldn't quit persons who had helped on time as if shouldn't forget those who are crimeless in society.

எழுமை எழுபிறப்பும் உள்ளுவர் தங்கண்

உதவி செய்தவர் பிறகொருகாலத்தில் கொடிய தீமை செய்தால் அவர் செய்த உதவியின் தரமும் கெட்டுபோகும்.

Even if one who had helped in the past does an extreme evil in the present, the tendency of his past help would lose its grade.

எந்நன்றி கொன்றார்க்கும் உய்வுண்டாம் உய்வில்லை
செய்ந்நன்றி கொன்ற மகற்கு

எந்த ஒரு அறத்தையும் மறந்துபோனவர்களுக்கு மன்னிப்பு கிடைக்கலாம் ஆனால் ஒருவர் காலத்தில் செய்த உதவியை மறந்தவர்களுக்கு மன்னிப்பு கிடைக்காது.

Even If one destroys at any respect of virtue may be pardoned but the stance of forgetting the helps done by one will never be pardoned.

புண்கணீர் பூசல் தரும்

விளக்கம்:
ஒருவர்மீது வைத்துள்ள அன்பை அடைத்து வைக்க முடியாது. அன்புக்குறியோர் துயரத்தில் இருக்கும்பொழுது கண்ணீர் பெருகி அன்பை வெளிக்காட்டுவர் அல்லவா?

குறள் 11:
வான்நின்று உலகம் வழங்கி வருதலால்
தான்அமிழ்தம் என்றுணரற் பாற்று

விளக்கம்:
விண்ணிலிருந்து தோன்றிய இப்புவியில் வாழும் அனைத்து உயிர்களும் வாழும் வண்ணம், அவ்விண்ணே தரும் மழையே முதல் அமிர்தம் ஆகிறது.

The rain that is offered by the sky for all living beings in the earth that too was offered by the sky is the first nectar.

துப்பார்க்குத் துப்பாய துப்பாக்கித் துப்பார்க்குத்
துப்பாய தூஉம் மழை.

விளக்கம்:
மழையினால் தான் குடிநீர் கிடைக்கிறது என்பது ஒரு புறம். உணவளிக்கும் அனைத்து தாவரவகைகள் வளர்வதற்கு மழை தான் காரணம்.

Besides rain is being a main source of drinking water, that is the base for growing all plants for food.

விண்இன்று பொய்ப்பின் விரிநீர் வியனுலகத்து
உள்நின்று உடற்றும் பசி.

பசிதீர்க்க கடல் நீரை பருக முடியுமா? நேரத்திற்கு மழை பொழியவில்லையென்றால் அனைத்து ஜீவராசிகளும் பசியால் துவளும்.

If there is no rain timely, all living beings shall get hunger vastly since the sea water can't be used for drinking .

ஏரின் உழாஅர் உழவர் புயல்என்னும்
வாரி வளங்குன்றிக் கால்.

மழை இப்புவிக்கு இடைவிடாது பொழியும் தன் பணியை செய்ய தவறுங்கால், புவியில் உழவும் தன் பணியை செய்ய தானே நிறுத்திக் கொள்ளும்.

If  rain stops its routine work to the earth, ploughing too would stop its work in the earth.

கெடுப்பதூஉம் கெட்டார்க்குச் சார்வாய்மற் றாங்கே
எடுப்பதூஉம் எல்லாம் மழை

விளக்கம்:
கடுமையாய் பொழிந்து புவியை மிரள வைப்பதும் மழைதான், பொழியா நிலை காட்டி புவியை வறண்டுபோக வைப்பதும்  மழை தான்.

Explanation in English:
It is the rain which threatens the earth by its over rain. It is also the rain which makes the earth drought by its no rain.

விசும்பின் துளிவீழின் அல்லால்மற் றாங்கே
பசும்புல் தலைகாண் பரிது

மழையென்று ஒன்று இல்லையென்றால் இப்புவியில் புற்களை கூட பார்க்கமுடியாது.

If it doesn't rain, even a bit of grass too can't be seen on the earth.

நெடுங்கடலும் தன்நீர்மை குன்றும் தடிந்தெழிலி
தான்நல்கா தாகி விடின்

விளக்கம்:
மேகங்கள் மூலம் கடலிலிருந்து நீரை எடுத்து மழை பொழிந்தாலும், மழை பெய்யாவிட்டால் கடலும் வறண்டுபோகும்.

The oceans too would get dried out if there is no rain fall even though rain gets water from oceans through clouds.

வறக்குமேல் வானோர்க்கும் ஈண்டு

மழையில்லையேல், பூஜை புனஸ்காரம் தியானம் போன்ற இறைச்செயல்கள் எதையும் செய்ய இயலாது.

ஐந்து புலன்களையும் அடக்கி ஆளும் ஒருவன், இவ்விஷயத்தில் முன்பு பாடம் பெற்று சான்றாக நின்று வானத்தில் வாழும் இந்திரனின் நிலையோடு ஒப்பிட்டு வாழ்பவன் ஆவான்.

மிக உயரிய குணம் நிறைந்த மாமனிதர்கள் ஒரு கணம் வெகுண்டால் அதை காப்பது என்பது அரிதாகும். (வெகுளா மாநிடர் வெகுண்டால் அதை காத்தல் அரிது என்று பொருள்படுகிறது)

It's hardly to abate the anger of ones who are extremely having good characters if they get angered. (It's meant if ones who basically don't anger are getting anger, it's hardly to tackle such..?)
